Movements used are natural and common, multi-joint, and found everywhere.  They are efficient and effective ways of moving your body or external objects.
This is entirely different from what you will find in the average “gym.”  Because they are natural movements, they are very safe.  Because of the natural and functional aspect of all of the movements, CrossFit improves your ability across a broad, general range of sports, skills, and activities.
CrossFit Workouts Are Executed At High Intensity...

CrossFit WODs (WorkOuts of the Day) are always timed; either how quickly you can do a certain number of activities, or how many activities you can do in a pre-determined time. This guarantees constant improvement, pushing you to your physical and psychological limit.  It is not important where you start with CrossFit; whether you’re a seasoned hard-core athlete, or someone who hasn’t ever worked out, all of the workouts can be scaled to you.  And over time, you will see the improvements. Generally speaking, the higher the intensity, the more fat burned, and the more muscle is gained. “3,2,1,GO!!!”
CrossFit Workouts Are Constantly Varied...

In the same way that you get bored of the same workout all the time, your body gets ‘bored’ as well.  It adapts quite quickly to a given set of movements executed the same way.  The more variety you can give your body, the more it has to do to adapt.  Adaptation means improvement. Variety also prepares you, physically and mentally, for a more broad range of challenges.  Challenges you would find where it really counts - in the real world!  Think about all of the physical ‘challenges’ you could find anywhere in the world: day-to-day life; any sport; any profession from office worker to soldier to astronaut; any activity from climbing stairs to carrying a child to running or fighting for your life; the best way to prepare for any physical possibility is to vary the basic movements which prepare you for any and all of these things.

What Types Of Exercises And Equipment Will I Use?

Variety, variety, variety.  But there are some basic movements that are consistent.  You will do squats, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, presses, handstands, cartwheels, rolls, deadlifts, bear walks; the list really is endless.  You will use equipment like dumbbells, kettlebells, Olympic weights and bars, Plyo boxes, rowers, and skipping ropes - to name but a very few. You will use all of these and many, many more, mixed in countless varieties, and used in many different ways and different lengths of time.  The WorkOut of the Day you do today may not come around again for months.
